Meet Dr. Thomas

Ian Thomas, MD MSc RMSK RSCC CSCS

Dr. Thomas, owner of Thomas Sports and Regenerative Orthopedics (TSARO), is a Harvard-trained orthopedic interventionist fellowship trained in Sports Medicine, Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography with additional fellowship experience in stem-cell harvesting techniques at the Harvard Dana Farber Cancer Institute and interventional pain procedures at Harvard Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Thomas has a particular interest in injury prevention, biomechanical analysis, sports performance optimization, diagnostic ultrasonography, regenerative medicine, and minimally-invasive sono-surgical techniques with a focus on performing arts athletes and golf medicine.

He has over ten years of coaching experience as a strength and conditioning coach, head coach, and program director in men's artistic gymnastics. He has trained multiple first-place all-around state and regional champions, junior elite and national competitors. Dr. Thomas has written book chapters in ultrasonography including the upcoming third edition of "Mayeaux's Essential Guide to Primary Care Procedures: Deep Vein Thrombosis Evaluation" and co-authored the chapter on gymnastics in the second edition of The American College of Sports Medicine’s “Sports Medicine: A Comprehensive Review”, the premier textbook for training sports medicine physicians.

He has served as the sideline physician for various collegiate and professional sports including ice hockey, football, soccer, wrestling, golf, men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, and has fellowship experience caring for baseball players, runners, and elite ice skaters, ballet dancers, gymnasts and other performing arts athletes.

Dr. Thomas was awarded the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education ranking him among the top ten graduating residents in the country. He was also awarded 1st place national leadership award from the AAFP Emerging Leaders Institute for building an ultrasound curriculum for his residency, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP), and thirteen academic institutions across three continents as well as fundraising for an ultrasound curriculum for the only Family Medicine Residency in Malawi, Africa.

Dr. Thomas serves as an Assistant Professor of WMU Medical School and Ultrasound Residency Curriculum Director at Western Michigan University (WMU) Residency Program at Grace Health where he also sees patients. Additionally, Dr. Thomas teaches full spectrum point-of-care ultrasound to physicians both nationally and internationally and serves as the Chair of the Ultrasound Assessment Council for Inteleos, Ad Hoc Instructor for the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), and Lead Instructor and eNewsletter writer for the Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI).

It has been Dr. Thomas’ dream is to return to his hometown of Battle Creek, MI to utilize his training with top experts in the fields of Sports and Regenerative Medicine, Orthopedics and Interventional Pain Medicine to provide state-of-the-art musculoskeletal and sports care for local athletes and active individuals.
