Platelet rich plasma (PRP) utilizes the growth factors and cytokines stored in the alpha-granules of platelets to promote healing through paracrine (close) and endocrine (distant) cell signaling which triggers fibroblast proliferation and type I collagen production resulting in faster healing times and return to activity for tendinopathies.
In osteoarthritis, the efficacy of PRP for osteoarthritis can be enhanced with Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M). A2M is a naturally occurring macromolecule present in low concentrations in circulation and joint fluid that function as an inhibitor of proteases responsible for joint degradation as well as a transporter of growth factors and cytokines when used in combination with PRP.
Alpha Granule Growth Factors
Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)
Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGFB)
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)
Epidermal growth factor (EGF)
Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)
Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IF1)
PRP is NOT covered by insurance and is associated with an out of pocket cost.
