Concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury resulting of decelerating force to the brain that results in neurochemical changes that can lead to physical, cognitive, and emotional changes as well as sleep difficulty which may often go unnoticed or intentionally unreported.

If an athlete has not completely recovered from the initial concussion and is allowed to return, there is an increased risk of ‘Second Impact Syndrome’ which can result in catastrophic brain injury.

Concussion cannot be diagnosed by CT scan or MRI, but they may be helpful in ruling out other concerns after head injury. Instead a battery of self-administered tests, physical exam, and ImPACT testing is utilized to evaluate concussion.

It is important to realize every concussion is different, but there are various factors that can optimize neurorecovery.
